UT Martin Skyhawks women’s basketball clawed to a 6-11 record after starting the season slow at 2-8.
Skyhawks head coach Kevin McMillan’s squad aims to get back to .500 as February approaches. Now, with four wins in the last seven contests, the Skyhawks look to continue the momentum forward.
This surge comes at the right time as the Skyhawks will contend in 14 straight games against their Ohio Valley conference rivals beginning on Jan. 16 at home vs the OVC leading Eastern Illinois Panthers at 5:30 p.m.. The Skyhawks have a 39-22 all-time record against the Panthers.
Forward Anaya Brown has been the team’s safety net throughout the season, leading the team in points, rebounds, and blocks per game. Brown averages 13.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 1.2 bpg.
Standout guard Kenley McCarn also continues her success at UT Martin, leading the team in assists per game. McCarn averages 12.8 ppg, 2.5 apg and 3.8 rpg. However, three point shooting efficiency is down for McCarn. Last season, she shot 37% from beyond the arc and just 31% this year.
Following the game against EIU, the Skyhawks hosts the SIU Edwardsville Cougars on Jan. 18 at 1 p.m.. The Cougars enter that contest with the worst record in the OVC and zero conference wins all season. SIUE enters the game, winning the last two matchups against the Skyhawks.
The Skyhawks will then travel to Tennessee State to face off against the Tigers on Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. Skyhawks look to get back at the Tigers after falling 55-53 in their most recent matchup last season.
The Skyhawks return home to host the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles on Jan. 25 at 1p.m.. The Skyhawks have won the last three meetings, most recently last season with a score of 79-71 in a 4th quarter comeback.
