The Skyhawk volleyball squad (6-10) concluded their shortened 2020-21 campaign with on a high note, defeating Austin Peay (9-4) in the second match of the Mar. 29 doubleheader to send the seniors out on a high note.
UTM’s two departing seniors, setter Kenzie Hinshaw and libido Kayla Long, had strong performances in the doubleheader. Hinshaw’s 59 assists were good enough to break her career record while her 16 digs rank as her best of the season. Long recorded a career-high in digs with 12.
The Skyhawks’ offense ran through junior middle blocker (MB) Karen Scanlon, who slammed 30 kills on a remarkable .338 hitting percentage. Scanlon was backed up by junior opposite (OPP) Jessica Reynolds‘ and junior outside hitter Logan Wallick’s 25 and 22 kills, respectively. Hinshaw’s playmaking ability was crucial for the Skyhawks, as her 11.38 assists-per-set average helped the team to a .216 hitting percentage.
On the defensive side of the ball, freshman libido Dylan Mott excelled with 36 total digs, with 23 coming in the Skyhawks’ game two win. Freshman MB Lauren O’Neill ranked first on the team in blocks with six.
The Skyhawks’ game two win improved the team’s record to 6-10 on the season, placing the Skyhawks in the middle of the conference in seventh place. The 2020-21 campaign marks the Skyhawks’ third season with a losing conference record since 2017.
