Not even the rain could stop the UTM soccer team from notching its first Ohio Valley Conference win on the road, earning the 2-1 victory over Murray State on Sunday afternoon.
It was senior forward Abi Sanvee who got the Skyhawks (3-7-1, 1-1 OVC) on the board. Junior Dominika Conc paced the Skyhawks with five shots, including three shots-on-goal and the eventual game-winner. Alyssa Curtis trailed with three shots while Hannah McGowen and Michelle Calmeyn both tallied two shots on the afternoon.
Junior goalkeeper Mariah Klenke registered all 90 minutes in goal, registering three saves while allowing just one goal.
The Skyhawks came out firing on all cylinders this afternoon at Cutchin Field, registering their first shot at the 5:20 mark off a header by Aoife Lennon. Lennon’s header was the first of six consecutive shots for the Skyhawks before finding the back of the net in the 24th minute. Sanvee set her sights on a rebound on the near side of the field from freshman Ellie Myrick, placing a header into the back of the net to give the Skyhawks the early one goal advantage. Sanvee has scored a goal in each of the Skyhawks wins this season.
Klenke registered her first save of the afternoon at the 42:08 mark before notching her second save just one minute later off the foot of Taylor Stevens. UTM held an 8-6 advantage in the shot column going into the break.
Fresh off her appearance with the Slovenian national team on Thursday, it was Conc’s fourth shot of the afternoon which gave the junior her first goal of the season. At the 63:00 mark, Conc took the pass from Calmeyn at the top of the box, tapping in the eventual game winner.
Trailing by two, the Racers cranked up the pace, outshooting the Skyhawks 7-2 before finding their lone goal of the afternoon in the 85th minute. Julie Mooney took the assist from Megg Hudson at the top of the box to beat Klenke and cut the margin in half. Mooney’s goal was her fourth of the season.
UTM will now turn their focus to alumni weekend as the Skyhawks play host to Jacksonville State on Friday, Oct. 4. Action is scheduled to get underway from Skyhawk Field at 7 p.m.
