Skyhawk soccer faces 10 game conference-only schedule in 2020-21 season

Along with volleyball, the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) released the schedule for women’s soccer for the 2020-21 campaign, featuring 10 regular season contests all within the conference.

The shortened regular season will be played over the span of six weeks, with every game being played on Tuesdays and Fridays and go from Mar. 2 to Apr. 6, with the OVC playoffs following shortly after.

“I want to thank the Directors of Athletics for their thorough and thoughtful approach in developing plans to move the OVC’s fall sports seasons to the winter and spring of 2021. I also want to express my gratitude to the Board of Presidents for their leadership as the Conference looks forward to reinstating athletic competition this academic year,” said OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche, according to Sports Information.

“I am delighted that we are able to provide our fall sports student-athletes with a plan for competition that sets forth a complete conference schedule.”

The Skyhawks will be looking to improve upon their 2019 success that saw the team go 8-6-5 over the regular season, recording a conference record of 6-2-2.

The Skyhawks will begin the season against Eastern Illinois at home. The Skyhawks were unable to pull a win off against the Panthers last year, with their sole matchup ending in a scoreless double overtime draw.

The team will travel to Nashville on Mar. 5 to take on the defending OVC champion Belmont Bruins. Despite defeating the Bruins in the 2019 regular season, the Skyhawks fell to Belmont in the OVC quarterfinals 2-3.

Following the Bruins, the Skyhawks will take on the Murray State Racers on Mar. 9 at home, a squad that UTM defeated 5-1 in 2019. The Skyhawks will remain at the nest on Mar. 12 for a date with the 2019 OVC runner-up SIUE Cougars, who beat UTM 3-0 last season.

The Skyhawks will then begin a five-game stretch against opponents that the squad defeated in 2019, starting with a road matchup against Morehead State (Mar. 16), at home against Jacksonville State (Mar. 23), on the road against Tennessee Tech (Mar. 26) and Austin Peay (Mar. 30) and back at home against Eastern Kentucky (Apr. 2). The Skyhawks outscored these five teams by a combined 14-3 margin in 2019.

UTM’s final 2020 contest will be at home against the Southeast Missouri Redhawks, who battled the Skyhawks to the bitter end with a 2-2 double overtime stalemate.
