Rachel Sprague and Jennifer Plocinik, both representatives of the University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team, chalked up All-Ohio Valley Conference honors today as the Skyhawks completed the league championships held at Button Rifle Range.
Sprague garnered All-OVC second-team accolades in smallbore, marking the third consecutive year she has been spotlighted amongst the league’s best (also earning first-team smallbore in 2020 and second-team air rifle in 2019). Meanwhile, Plocinik was named to the All-OVC air rifle second team, which was the second postseason accolade of her career (additionally being named to the All-OVC Newcomer team in smallbore in 2017).
Today was the second and final day of the 2021 OVC Championships, as the air rifle portion took place after Saturday featured the smallbore competition. The Skyhawks pieced together a score of 2,306 today and were led by Plocinik’s 586 tally (98-98-99-97-96-98).
Sprague was UTM’s next highest finisher in air rifle (98-98-93-98-96-94; 577) while Nick Fares (96-97-94-99-93-97) wasn’t too far behind with a 576. Jacob Osborne (93-92-96-96-92-98) and Abigail Donald (94-90-93-97-90-94) completed the Skyhawk team scoring with final tallies of 567 and 558, respectively.
Murray State won the 2021 OVC crown with an aggregate score of 4,676. Host Morehead State came in second place with 4,656 points and was followed by Jacksonville State (4,624) and UT Martin (4,563).
The Skyhawks will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 21 when it competes in an NCAA Qualifier against Memphis in Murray, Ky.
