Skyhawk golf sweeps team, individual championships at National Intercollegiate for third team victory of 2020-21 campaign

For the third time in four tournaments this season, the UTM golf program is coming home with some team hardware. The Skyhawks posted a nine-stroke victory while junior Nick Wolf tied for individual medalist honors at the National Intercollegiate hosted by Mercer at Reynolds Plantation Golf Course.

UTM carded a 294 (+6) today, finishing with a three-round tally of 855 (-9). The Skyhawks were the only team to shoot under-par as runner-up North Alabama recorded an even-par 864. UTM finished the tournament ranking first in par-3 scoring (3.17, +10), par-4 scoring (4.03, +5) and birdies (55).

“I’m proud of the team for their performance this week,” Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. “They played so well the first two rounds and hung in there today. We have areas to improve on but this was a great win for our team and program.”

A junior out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Wolf earned his second medalist victory in the last three weeks. His final-round 71 (-1) included three birdies and an eagle and resulted in a 204 (-12) for the tournament, tying Troy’s Brent Hamm atop the 75-man leaderboard. Overall, Wolf led the event in birdies (18) and par-4 scoring (3.77, -7) while also pacing UTM in par-5 scoring (4.50, -6).

“I could not be any happier for Nick,” Swafford said. “He’s earned this. He’s worked as hard as anyone on his game and in the weight room. It’s all coming together and it’s a joy to watch.”

The Skyhawks boasted three top-10 finishers in the tournament as Jack Story and Tate Chumley each finished ninth with even-par 216’s. That marks the 12th career top-10 finish in career of Story, who was responsible for a team-high five birdies as part of a 73 (+1) today. The senior lefty led UTM with a 3.00 par-3 scoring average (E) for the tournament. Chumley’s third top-10 of the season and ninth of his career came after a 75 (+3) today which included four birdies over his last 11 holes.

Redmont ranked second in the tournament field with 39 pars, posting a 75 (+3) this morning as the Skyhawks’ fourth and final scorer. His 220 (+4) for the event ranked just outside the top-20 in the individual standings.

Jacob Uehlein’s 76 (+4) today narrowly missed the cut for UTM’s scoring lineup. The Tullahoma, Tennessee native finished the tournament with a 233 (+17).

Competing as an individual, Peyton Dix carded a 226 (+10) for the event, including his final-round 79 (+7).

The Skyhawks head to Dickson, Tennessee, for their next tournament, taking part in the Murray State Intercollegiate at Greystone Golf Course on April 5-6.
