The UTM golf squad put together another quality round to wrap up the Murray State Invitational today, carding a 283 (-5) to finish second overall at the event held at Greystone Golf Course.
The Skyhawks made a charge at the tournament title this morning, finishing with a final tally of 847 (-17) over 54 holes. That score was only three strokes behind first-place Belmont, who shot a 282 (-6) today on its way to an 844 (-20) overall score.
“It was a great week overall with a lot of positives,” UTM head coach Austin Swafford said. “We started slow today but made a push late and posted a great score. We’ll look to improve a few areas and get ready for next week.”
The Skyhawks placed three golfers in the top-seven of the individual standings, led by Nick Wolf’s third-place showing. The junior from Murfreesboro, Tennessee accounted for his third top-three finish of the 2020-21 campaign as his 209 (-7) trailed only two scorers in the 91-man field. He registered a team-best par-5 scoring average (4.50, -6) and also ranked fourth in the entire tournament in par-4 scoring (3.93, -2).
Behind a team-best 68 (-4) performance today, Tate Chumley came in fourth place with a cumulative score of 210 (-6). He wrapped up the event ranking in the top-three in the field in par-4 scoring (3.83, -5) and pars (39).
UTM’s third top-seven finisher was Jack Story, who generated a 212 (-4) for the tournament. The senior lefty from Dickson sported a team-best par-3 scoring average (3.00, E) and rolled in a team-high 15 birdies over the two-day event.
The Skyhawks’ remaining two members of the scoring lineup also notched their first top-25 finishes of the season. Jacob Uehlein and Bryson Morrell tied for 24th place after carding identical scores of 220 (+4).
Competing as individuals, Peyton Dix finished with an overall score of 222 (+6) while Luke Smith posted a 230 (+14).
Chumley’s 68 today included a co-team-high five birdies, a dozen pars and just one bogey on the scorecard. Wolf was responsible for a 70 that included four birdies while Story tallied a 71 with five birdies to tie Chumley for the team lead in that category. Uehlein’s 74 included three birdies and was the final countable round for UTM. Morrell carded a 76 in Round 3 to complete the Skyhawks’ representation as a team.
Dix came away with three birdies today on his way to an even-par 72 while Smith’s 78 included a pair of birdies.
UTM completes the regular season next week at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate, visiting Hermitage Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tennessee on April 12-13.
