Considerable rain and wind occurred throughout Day 1 of the Loyola Intercollegiate today as the UTM golf team wrapped up its first round of the spring season at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
Senior Jack Story led the way for the Skyhawks today, carding a 71 (-1) to rank ninth in the field of 112 golfers. The southpaw from Dickson ranks third in the event in par-5 scoring (4.25, -3) and fifth in birdies (five).
Nick Wolf and Ross Redmont followed with 74’s (+2) during the first round. Wolf secured four birdies and ranks sixth in the field with a 3.00 par-3 scoring average (E) while Redmont was steady with a pair of birdies and the sixth-most pars (13) in the tournament. Completing the countable scoring for UTM was Tate Chumley, who accumulated a 77 (+5) with one birdie.
Mason Chandler (79, +7) was additionally part of the scoring lineup while Jacob Uehlein (75, +3) competed as an individual. Both Chandler and Uehlein dialed up a pair of birdies for the Skyhawks as Uehlein ranks just outside the tournament’s top-10 in par-5 scoring (4.50, -2).
As a team, UTM ranks 11th in the stacked field of 19 teams. The Skyhawks shot a combined 296 (+8) on the first 18 holes, sitting six strokes out of fourth place in the tournament. The squad ranks third in par-3 scoring (3.25, +5) and fifth in pars (55).
“Overall I’m proud of how our guys did today,” UTM assistant coach Austin Swafford said. “They handled themselves well in tough conditions starting out and played hard all day. There were many positives from today we can build on – including Jack continuing his strong play from the fall. We are looking forward to the second round tomorrow.”
The Skyhawks will tee off the second round between 10:27 and 11:03 a.m. local time on Sunday, Feb. 23. UTM will be paired with Loyola (Md.), Northern Illinois and Loyola Marymount off Hole No. 1.
