The UTM Student Government Association (SGA) will host Diversity Week Monday, Nov. 11 – Friday, Nov. 15. As the event gets closer, SGA is preparing for one of their largest events of the year. The Multicultural Affairs Committee has put together events and activities that reflect how SGA values diversity.
“Diversity in the university community helps create stronger personal as well as working relationships and helps to avoid miscommunication based on cultural differences and ignorance about other groups”, Mark McCloud, director of the Office of Career Planning and Development, said.
A movie night will kick off the week: The Hate U Give, will be shown Monday Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in Watkins Auditorium.
On Tuesday, Nov. 12, there will be a Diversified Food Bash in the UC Ballroom from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to try foods from all around the world made by students.
SGA will also host the “A Mile In Our Shoes” forum where students of different backgrounds will come together to discuss their personal challenges that they face in their daily lives as minorities. The forum will begin at 6 p.m. in Watkins Auditorium.
On Thursday, Nov. 14, there will be a “Diversity Gameshow” at 7 p.m. in Watkins Auditorium.
Diversity Week will move outside on Friday where an event in the Quad will take place. Beginning at 11 a.m., there will be a Diversity Social in The Quad where students can come speak about diversity and differences.
Finally, ending Diversity Week on Saturday, the Ultimate Race will take place. This event is a relay competition where students will compete to learn more about diversity and its importance.
The SGA hopes students will participate in the diversity events the Multicultural Affairs Committee has worked during these past few months.
