SGA president welcomes students

Dear Skyhawks,

My name is Devin Majors and I am the President of the UTM Student Government Association (SGA).

I am excited to welcome you all to the University of Tennessee at Martin. I hope that everyone has had a great summer and is ready to begin a productive school year.

SGA is a student-led governing body that represents the thousands of UTM students to the administration. Our organization has four different branches: Executive, Legislative, Judicial and Freshman Council. We have over 50 student leaders who work day in and out to provide representation for the student body.

It is important for you all to know that each and every one of you matters to myself and the rest of Student Government. Every student is a member of SGA, regardless if you live on or off campus, attend the main campus or the satellite campuses, or if you are a freshman or a senior. We are here for the students, by the students. As a tuition-paying student, your voice deserves to be heard and it is my job to ensure that this happens.

My Vice President, Brandon Anderson, and my Secretary General, Esmeralda Mejorado and I were all elected for our vision for the future. We vowed to be advocates for positive change and to always put the students first and make sure that you all are kept in mind when decisions are being made.

As a part of our vision, we have made a few changes that will allow us to be more transparent and accessible to you all. We have planned new events such as our new “Student Appreciation Week” (Sep 10th- 15th), where we will be giving out free merchandise, hosting voter registration drives, tailgating at the football game, among other fun activities. We have also moved our meeting times from 9 p.m. up to 7 p.m. We believe that this will allow more students to participate and attend SGA meetings. Our Communications Director, Veronica Kanka, has been hard at work to improve our social media and on-campus presence so that we can efficiently relay information to you all.

Over the course of this year, we plan to relentlessly advocate for the student body by working with the administration, extensively improve communication with the student body and suggest new ideas and initiatives that will provide a better experience for all UTM students.

I invite you all to stop by the SGA Office (room 245) in the Student Life Office located in the University Center or to attend SGA Senate meetings every other Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Robert Smith Legislative Chambers (UC 111). I also invite you to send me an email at sga1@utm.edu.

UTM is a wonderful university to be a part of and I look forward to seeing you all this school year!

Best Regards,

Devin Majors

President

Student Government Association
