The brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) hosted a presentation on different topics relating to risk management March 27 in Watkins Auditorium.
The presentation focused on two topics concerning issues related to hazing and high-risk drinking behaviors, including tips for how to prevent these issues from happening.
Former SAE President Glenndon Adams and current President Jake Scott led the presentation, and hosted UTM Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Andy Lewter as the featured guest speaker.
“These are important issues facing colleges all over the country,” Lewter said. “All students need to know how to detect these negative behaviors and what resources they have to combat and report these problems.”
Adams and Scott led the first discussion topic concerning hazing by explaining what constitutes and is considered hazing, as well as the consequences for engaging in this behavior.
They also provided examples of what policies and programs that multiple organizations on campus are implementing to prevent hazing from happening.
Adams presented the second topic on how to prevent high risk drinking behaviors, explaining how alcohol effects the body and provided examples on when excessive drinking may lead to high risk behaviors.
“These issues affect students all across the board, not just Greek Life,” Chris Gunlefinger, assistant director of Student Life, said. “Incidents can occur anywhere on campus, so students need to be aware of how to prevent these issues and what resources are available to help. That’s why we encouraged all students to attend.”
Gunlefinger also serves as the IFC Advisor and helped coordinate the event.
