Greek organizations are featured at many universities, and they are significant in the growth of the community. During this past week, potential new members became acquainted with the different sororities and fraternities at UT Martin. At the end of the week, these students chose their new homes, where they will begin the initiation process to become full members.
This event consisted of The Interfraternity Council (IFC), which governs Alpha Gamma Rho, Kappa Alpha Order, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Sigma Chi.
Additionally, The College Panhellenic Council (CPC), which governs Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Sigma Alpha, also hosted a rush week. Sigma Alpha hosts a different rush week separate from the rest of the CPC.
Jaden Knott, a junior in Sigma Alpha Epsilon, spoke on how becoming a member of a fraternity promoted changes within himself.
“Being in a fraternity has affected me in a positive way. Coming into college, I was very reserved and would never get out of my comfort zone. Being in a fraternity has pushed me to open up to trying new things and talking to people I wouldn’t normally talk to. Being in a fraternity makes me focus on my grades more as well because our whole chapter holds each other accountable. You make friends and memories that last a lifetime,” Knott said.
Many students have found that being involved with Greek life has given them several opportunities and the chance to grow as a student and individual, while being involved in something bigger than themselves. They have created lifelong friendships and are involved within an organization that will continue to be with them after graduation.
Ceci Rodriguez, a freshman potential new member, spoke on her personal experience with rushing for The College Panhellenic Council and the importance it holds to her and all of campus.
“I wanted to rush because I grew up around women who were in Greek life. I saw the opportunities, friendships and experiences they gained from being in Greek life and knew that’s what I wanted in my life…I’ve met so many amazing women and have made so many new friends. I think fraternities and sororities are important for campus here at UTM because they give people a place to call home and give people a place to belong,” said Rodriguez.
