Sabrina Carpenter has been swimming in success after her sixth studio album Short n’ Sweet. She had reached one billion streams before the album had even come out with her singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please”, which also reigned the Billboard Hot 100 at number one all summer long. After the release of the twelve song album, the adoration for her new music path came to an all time high.
The first track on this album,“Taste”, is arguably one of the strongest songs. This song became a single after the release of the album, and had one of the most memorable music videos of the year starring Jenna Ortega. With the controversy surrounding the real-life inspiration for this song, it became largely talked about on social media platforms.
Carpenter has slower hits on the album like “Dumb & Poetic”, “Lie To Girls”, and “Don’t Smile” towards the end of the album. She has a way of being open and honest about her vengeance, jealousy and her sexual preferences that is a breath of fresh air while also having a shock factor upon listening.
The overall sound of the album is a very dreamy, sensual aesthetic. She tries to capture a lot of sounds at once, for example, “Slim Pickins” has a country twang, while “Bed Chem” has a synth-pop background. She is exercising the limits of her vocal capabilities while also defying how many different sounds or genres can be in one album.
Short n’ Sweet has been taking over the world recently, multiplied with the start of Carpenter’s tour and with good reason. If you are a fan of pop and unabashedly feminine music, then I would suggest listening to the album in its entirety. It’s arguably a no-skip album made by the next Taylor Swift of the pop world.
