Critics are raving that multi-talented writer, producer, director and actor Tyler Perry has created himself another award-winning movie with his latest big screen creation “Temptation.”
This movie is filled with everything the name promises and the Hollywood stars to bring it to life. “Temptation” hit theaters around the country on March 29, 2013 and by the end of the Easter weekend, “Temptation”was the hottest topic.
The movie follows the life of a small-town girl named Judith, played by “Eve’s Bayou” star Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who has loved and only been imitate with one man in her life, Brice, played by sitcom’s “House of Payne” star Lance Gross. Judith finds her self and her marriage in a compromising situation when she decides to become more than just friends with a rich and attractive man named Harley. Would Judith risk it all for something that seems better?
The movie features stars such as Kim Kardashian, Vanessa Williams, Brandy Norwood and Ella Joyce to name a few. Coming in third place after its opening weekend, the movie grossed $22.3 million, which is average for Perry’s movies on opening weekend. His last movie “Madea Goes to Jail” was the biggest opening ever for Perry, grossing $41 million that weekend.
Perry is known for his outright expression of religion in his movies, but “Temptation” is so artistically crafted that the audience isn’t bombarded with the religious messages that it makes audience members review their own life. Many are fans of Perry because of his ability to connect with audience members, mostly African-Americans, on levels most don’t want to explore or just don’t understand.
“It’s refreshing to see black people play roles that don’t label them negatively. This movie might not be the superhero role, but it places things that happen in real life on the big screen. As a young African-American trying to reach success, the level he has [reached] it is [very] inspirational,” said Jeremy Smith, Senior Communication major.
Perry first got his claim to fame when he began touring around the country performing his still thriving plays in the early 2000s. He is best known for creating and performing, in drag, the infamous, crime breaking, no-back-talk-taking, outspoken and funny Mable ‘Madea’ Simmons, a thuggish tough elderly woman who isn’t afraid to fight or speak her mind.
Perry’s success has grown since performing on the stage in the South and his success doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.
