Review: Matt Corby’s music offers four-minute resolution to life

I’m going to let you in on a secret. Ever heard of Matt Corby? If you have, good for you, because no one I’ve come across has. If not, you can read this article and go tell all your friends that you know who Matt Corby is, and his music is a shot of life.

This musician first appeared on a show, “Australian Idol,” aired in Australia, at the age of 16 in 2007. He finished as a runner-up. Seeing how at the moment he’s leading a much more successful career than the actual winner, Natalie Gauci, runner-up, is arguably interchangeable with first second place. At the moment, he is leading a more successful career than the actual winner, Natalie Gauci, which leads me to believe that runner-up might as well be called “first-second place.”

In 2009, he relocated to the UK and signed with the label Communion by owner Ben Lovett, a band member of Mumford and Sons. There, he recorded his second EP. (For those who have no idea what that is, it’s an extended play album, meaning it has more than one single on it. It’s called EP, because it’s too short to be a LP or full studio album. Don’t sweat it; I didn’t know what it was either before writing this article.)

After making this EP and performing in numerous London concerts, he returned to Australia to play in fans’ backyards all over the country. During December 2012, he released his most successful album to date called “In the Flame,” receiving 5 platinum certifications by Australian Recording Industry Association. His vocals on the album are soulful and endearingly honest.

His upcoming album, which will derive from his Resolution EP album (released July 2013) has an unknown release date. It’s in the process of being made as you read this! Spoiler alert: that’s the secret. You now know about an album that isn’t entirely finished. This 22-year-old musician has incorporated a lot of his personal philosophies and struggle in his upcoming album.

The focus of the recently released Resolution EP album is the single “Resolution.” The keyboard clarity and heartening pounding of drums all reflect Corby’s view of the world and the role people play as individuals and collectively as a group.

“The song came from that, the reason that we are human. This is a real thing; we’re animals that are social with one another and we are all living in the same time, so we should appreciate one another for that purpose. I think after you realize that, things become a little bit simpler. And I don’t really [care] if you don’t understand that, that’s the craziest thing, because it’s not going to change the way I treat you – a human being,” said Corby, in an interview with The Spitpress in June 2013.

In an hour’s time, he writes about relationships with people, what the answer to life is, what it means to live “from the cradle to quarter age, [to buy the] book but [not] flip the page.”

Everyone, between the ages of 18 and 22 especially, has a craving for answers and truth, whether it’s about identity, dealing with other people, image and reputation, spirituality or life in general. Matt Corby has a resolution and it only takes four minutes to hear his thoughts in a beautifully inspiring song.
