Review: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 10 Premiere did not disappoint

As an avid Grey’s Anatomy fan, I have been anxiously awaiting the return of the beloved medical drama ever since the ninth season left us not knowing if Chief Webber would survive.

Whether you are one of those who has been a fan from the show’s birth, or if you are one, like me, who caught up thanks to Netflix and quickly became obsessed, you are used to the nail-biting finales every season. You are also used to the devastatingly long wait in between each season. So, for those who have not yet caught up, stop reading, because this article will contain spoilers.

The tenth season arrived with a two-hour long premiere. It took an agonizingly long time for anyone to discover that Webber was hurt, and an equally long time for anyone to realize that Brooks was missing after she went to find Webber.

Were any of us surprised that Shane lied to Heather in order to spend more time with McDreamy? Of course we were not. He’s been trying to become Derek’s star student since he first joined the show. How can anyone blame him for using every opportunity to get ahead in such a cutthroat environment?

Of course, there are very few of us who can honestly say that we were sad when Heather was electrocuted and killed off the show. Sure, she had her purpose, but her character was more annoying than anything else. I know there are a few fans who truly loved “Mousey,” as Yang affectionately named her, but they are far and few between.

Throughout the entire two-hour premiere, there was the side story of all the pesky firemen who would not stay in their hospital beds, but insisted on going back out to the mudslide to look for survivors. I love Grey’s as much as anyone, but that seemed a little overdone. It felt almost like filler, to make sure they had enough to make the premiere last the full two hours.

I absolutely cannot ignore the discussion of Arizona cheating on Callie. Why did she do it? Is this the end of Arizona and Callie’s marriage? I can’t make a decision on this one. On one hand, I can’t believe that Arizona cheated on Callie, after all they have been through together. However, on the other hand, I feel like Callie is over-reacting a bit by refusing to even talk to Arizona about it.

A big surprise in the show was when it was announced that Chief Webber named Meredith as his family in his paperwork. Does he still consider her a daughter, even after all the times she has specifically told him to stop? After just having a baby, Meredith was not in a good place to make a decision regarding someone’s life, much less the man who destroyed her parent’s marriage. Looking at everything that was going on, it seemed like Meredith made the best decision in going with the results of tests as the deciding factor for Webber’s treatment.

By the end of the premiere, Brooks was dead, Webber was barely alive and Callie had moved her and her daughter to Meredith and Derek’s house. This left us all to wonder what the rest of the season would hold.

My main concern is what is going to become of Grey’s Anatomy after Sandra Oh leaves. What is Grey’s Anatomy without Christina Yang? She is Meredith’s person, as well as one of the original characters. The show did not drag when Katherine Heigl left, nor did it falter when Lexie and Mark died but I’m not so sure it will survive when Yang leaves.

Grey’s Anatomy is one of those shows that pulls you in and really makes you feel connected to each character. I can’t wait to see what this tenth season will bring.
