The UTM golf team combined for 14 birdies today but fell two spots in the team standings to place fourth in the Gulf Coast Collegiate.
The Skyhawks shot a 293 (+5) today to bring their 54-hole total to 876 (+12) for the tournament, finishing behind tournament champion New Orleans (+2), Samford (+6) and UT Rio Grande Valley (+11).
Individually, Ross Redmont carded his third top-10 finish of the season – placing sixth in the field of 56 golfers with an even-par 216. For the tournament, the redshirt senior out of Memphis piled up 37 pars and 10 birdies through the 54-hole event.
A flurry of birdies helped Jack Story finish as UTM’s top finisher in Round 3 as the senior lefty chalked up all five of his birdies over the final 13 holes as part of a 71 (-1). Tate Chumley posted two birdies, 14 pars and two bogeys on his way to an even-par 72.
Redmont (two birdies, 14 pars) and Nick Wolf (three birdies) completed the team total with scores of 73 and 77, respectively. Jacob Uehlein provided two birdies as part of a 78 while Luke Smith (one birdie, 14 pars) generated his best score of the tournament with a 75 as an individual.
Story and Wolf finished just outside the top-10 as the UTM duo tied for 11th place with a 220 (+4). Chumley wasn’t too far behind with a 222 (+6). Smith (229, +13) led the team and ranked third in the tournament field with 38 pars and Uehlein tallied a 230 (+14).
“I’m proud of the effort this week,” Skyhawk assistant coach Austin Swafford said. “Unfortunately, we beat ourselves too much and have to minimize the little mistakes. If we can correct those and play our game, we’ll get back on track.”
UTM continues its spring slate next week when it hosts the Grover Page Classic on March 9-10. Once again, this year’s event will be held at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
