Red Tails soared in box offices this weekend, finishing at number 2 after Underworld Awakening, despite a lot of disapproval of many movie production companies who thought the movie would result in the same disappointing numbers of previous movies based on the airmen.
The movie grossed $19.1 million and is expected to continue to shine with the coming of Black History Month.
With award winning names like Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard, viewers shouldn’t be surprised that the movie was anything less than exciting.
The up-and-coming cast included black men like The Secret Life of Bees co-stars Tristan Wilds and Nate Parker, R&B singer Ne-Yo and rapper Clifford “Method Man” Smith. They show strength and bring the real heroes to life on screen as they deal with developing friendships, the battles they take on together, the pressures of the war, and even love.
The film gained much support across the nation and even in Martin, TN as the African American Greek members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council went to see the movie on Sunday.
“It was so good! I wasn’t expecting it to be that in-depth of the airmen lives. I enjoyed seeing the different sides to them and learning a little more than I’ve heard in some classes and TV,” comments Anthony Wilkins, Senior Communications major.
Even though many African Americans are proudly supporting the film, it was reported that many different races are finding this movie to be entertaining and enjoyable.
“It was really personable. I was into the movie the whole time! I love that the movie gave the audience that feeling of being more attached to the characters,” Saychay Kittirath, a Junior Business Management major.
George Lucas was even attached to this film, personally spending an estimated $100 million in financing the film.
Audiences are advised by eventhe biggest names in the entertainment industry like R&B singer Tyrese, businessman Sean Combs and the President and First Lady that it is worth seeing.
