From ’90s hard rock to 2000s emo rock, fans of the genre are getting treated this year.
Just days after My Chemical Romance (MCR) announced their reunion for a show in Los Angeles, and after hiatuses spanning from 2001-2006 and 2012 to just recently, the politically-charged, revolutionary band Rage Against the Machine (RATM) will reunite for a series of dates in 2020, including Coachella.
Rumors began circulating on social media following MCR’s announcement of their reunion, which went unheeded but were later confirmed by Wayne Kamemoto, a longtime associate of the band, according to Forbes.
Kamemoto didn’t reveal much, but told Forbes, “The band’s social media is accurate.”
RATM has been out of the music scene for years. The last time the band performed was during their 2011 L.A. Rising show, and the last album they released was Renegades back in 2000.
Following the dissolution of RATM, the band has seen a couple of brief reunions and solo work. RATM lead singer walked his own path, on which he released last released a solo material in 2016.
The most notable musical works produced by the former band members following 2000 was the formation of rock supergroup Prophets of Rage, which featured three of four RATM members: bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello and drummer Brad Wilk.
The super-group, which also included members from Cypress Hill and Public Enemy, lasted from 2016-2019, and dissolved following the announcement of RATM’s reunion.
Vocalist and rapper Chuck D, who was also in Cypress Hill, announced the band’s split on Instagram, saying, “It was about doing something greater than (my)self, 2020 keeping (Zack De La Rocha’s) spot warm for (RATM).”
In addition to Coachella, the band will be performing in southwest locations close to the US-Mexico border. In 2020, the band will perform on March 26 in El Paso, Texas, March 28 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and March 30 in Phoenix, Arizona, according to Loudwire.
RATM’s Coachella dates are April 10 and 17 in Indio, California.
The band has not disclosed if they are making more music under the name RATM.
