PRSSA holds 10th annual ‘Miss Understood’

UTM Public Relations Student Society of America’s (PRSSA) 10th Annual “Miss Understood” Womanless Beauty Revue was held on Oct. 3, in the Watkins Auditorium at 7 p.m.

This year’s pageant had quite the crowd and filled Watkins with laughter. The emcees were Dr. Chara Van Horn, assistant professor of Communications, and David Belote, assistant vice chancellor for Student Affairs.

For the past decade, PRSSA has sponsored the Womanless Beauty Revue every year during Homecoming week. The pageant is held for several reasons. First, it is to provide entertainment during Homecoming week in which both Greek and non-Greek groups can compete and participate equally while providing good will between the organizations. Also, the event is a double fundraiser. The funds from the event help support students throughout the year in visiting PR firms, attending conventions and for other group activities. A portion of the funds are donated to a local charity. For the past three years, that charity has been St. John’s Community Development services.

The judges of the pageant were Diane Shaw, assistant professor of Art; Richard Robinson, associate professor of Communications; Bud Grimes, director of University Relations; Tomi Parrish, instructor of Communications; Lorrie Jackson, administrative coordinator for the Center for International Education and Sam Ray, Administrative Assistant to the Department of Communications.

The contestants of this year’s pageant had names the audience found interesting: Anita Mann, freshman Agriculture Business major; South Dakota, freshman with an undecided major; Lepresha Headboard, freshman Agriculture Business major; Phat Amy, sophomore Agricultural Business major; Mona Lott, freshman Biology major; Miley Spears, freshman Turfgrass major; Jackie Willows, senior HHP major; Sha-Wanda, freshman Secondary Education major; Anita Moorehead, freshman Anatomy and Sex Education major; Cinnamon, freshman Agricultural Business major; White Chocolate, freshman with an undecided major; Hannah Mantana, senior English Literature major and  Clayana Target, freshman MRS major.

The winner of the Womanless Beauty Revue for the People’s Choice Award was Dakota Adams as “South Dakota” representing the Leaders-in-Residence who raised the most money to donate to the PRSSA charity of choice. The Miss Congeniality and Miss Understood title was given to Chase Manley as “Hannah Mantana” representing Kappa Alpha Order. Taking first maid was Jake McElroy as “Clayana Target” representing the Clay Target team. The second maid and Best in Talent award was given to Austin Anderson as “Lepresha Headboard,” representing AGR.

PRSSA is a student, professional organization associated with the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).  The purpose is to provide college students with an opportunity to work together to gain experience in the field of public relations, to network with future employers and to establish ties with other students at UTM and other universities who plan to work in the field of public relations. The UTM chapter’s association with the national organization also gives students the opportunity to network and attend national events that provide training and networking opportunities and to also compete for scholarships and awards at the national level.
