Photo gallery: Eternal Flame completed

Retired UT Martin Art professor David McBeth places a ceramic flame of his design and making atop the Eternal Flame monument on the second floor of the Paul Meek Library. Chancellor Keith Carver and others witnessed the event at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, 2022. The original Eternal Flame was lighted during Homecoming in November 1986, while Margaret Perry was chancellor. However, the monument was later removed and dismantled. In 2007, Larry Holder (UT Martin ’81) of Information Technology Services sought to have the monument restored, and, under the authority of then-chancellor Nick Dunagan, this was accomplished, with the aid of Charley Deal, Karen Elmore, Tim Nipp and others. The only piece missing from the redesign was the ceramic flame, which was then commissioned to McBeth to produce. For more information on the Eternal Flame, go to www.utm.edu/staff/lholder/eternalflame/.
