The Tau Tetarton chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa is returning to UTM after disbanding in 2016.
Phi Sigma Kappa was the first fraternity at UTM, with their charter being granted in 1960 and lasting until 2016.
Phi Sigma Kappa was founded at the University of Massachusetts in 1873 for the purpose of creating a society to promote morality, learning and social culture.
In the midst of their reentry to UTM, the brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa elected Mitchell Roland as the new chapter president. Roland is a nontraditional student who chose Phi Sigma Kappa because of, “the lifelong brotherhood dedicated to the betterment of the individual, the university community and the world, by giving its members opportunities to develop leadership skills, participate in service to others, achieve academic excellence, experience cultural diversity and practice personal integrity.”
Phi Sigma Kappa is returning with 20 new members who will be initiated in November.
This semester offered a different type of recruitment for Phi Sigma Kappa as members from their national headquarters came down to show potential members the benefits of being a Phi Sig. While different from standard fraternity recruitment, the technique proved successful with the initiation of the 20 new members.
Roland stated in regards to restarting his chapter, ”there is a lot of logistical means behind the scenes that most people would not normally see. This in itself is an upside as well, the fact that we get to make our fraternity in our image.”
The new brothers are excited to be back and ready to show the campus the new Phi Sig.
