Women of Excellence (WOX) is an organization that strives to prepare the women of UT Martin to live a life of “excellence” and prosper in all future endeavors. They do this by forming bonds between each of its members, along with creating spaces for each other to embrace themselves around like-minded individuals. WOX aims to help with the daily struggles that come with not only being a woman but also just being a college student.
Being at college can be a struggle for everyone. Add on top of that having to build relationships with people you have never met before, and it can leave someone lost. That is where WOX steps in. They encourage women to meet other women who are familiar with their situations and can better help find avenues and outlets. Daviona Gbee, social media manager for WOX, speaks on her experience of being a part of WOX, ”Being a part of Women of Excellence has not only helped me to express my creativity and build my technical skills, but it has also helped me build meaningful connections and motivate others to reach their full potential.”
WOX, in partnership with Elevated Creations and Refreshing Church of Martin, is hosting an ElevateHer: Women’s Empowerment Weekend on April 13-14. The goal of this weekend is to help build the bonds and connections of the women on the campus of UT Martin and also anyone who may be interested within the local area. The weekend will have different events such as a pop-up shop dedicated to women-owned businesses in the area, followed up by a discussion panel. This will conclude with a women’s brunch being held after “Women’s Day Service” at Refreshing Church of Martin on Sunday.
The WOX will continue to provide empowerment and memorable relationships for many young women at UT Martin, being a voice for those on campus and pushing for equality among all.
