Opinion: 10 Things to Do Over Winter Break

Winter break is definitely a welcome rest from all the assignments and deadlines of the school year, but what happens when you go from being super busy to being super bored? No worries! This list will have plenty of things for you to do to stay busy over the break.

  1. Make a craft
One of the best ways to stay busy over the break is to make something! Whether this is a painting, a no-sew blanket, a Christmas ornament or other fun things, making a craft can be an entertaining and productive thing to do (Especially since making any of those can brighten up your dorm room coming back in the Spring!)
  2. Try out a new recipe
Trying out new recipes can be a daunting task, but they are most definitely rewarding. Perhaps experiment with new dessert recipes or perfect the art of bread-making. Whatever the case may be, cooking and baking are fun ways to fill your time and your stomach.
  3. Start a new television series
If you haven’t started Grey’s Anatomy yet, now would be the time to. If you’ve already seen it, watch it again! Winter break is the ideal time for binge-watching a new series or even just checking out that movie you haven’t had time to get to.
  4. Read a book
With all the extra time you’ll have on your hands, maybe trade out that six plus hours of phone time for a new book. Often when classes are in session, it can be hard to make time to sit down and read for pleasure. However, reading is a great way to expand your mind and take you on adventures without ever leaving the comfort of your own home.
  5. Study a new language
Admittedly, it’s hard to start learning a new language, especially when you have other homework on top of it. It can seem like you never have the time to start learning something on your own accord. Winter break changes all that by providing you with four weeks of mostly uninterrupted break time, so why not use it to knock out your first few lessons of Spanish, French or even Korean?
  6. Catch up on sleep
Catching up on sleep is one of the hardest things to do when classes are in session. Though you have the weekends and occasionally a few days off, it can seem like you never really get caught up on your shut eye. Make sure to spend some time this winter break to relax and cuddle up in a blanket for that well-deserved rest you’ve been dreaming of all semester long.
  7. Go for a drive
Christmas lights are already up in Martin, and many other places are no different. Going for a drive can be a great way to spend a night or two of your winter break. Perhaps make it a family-event. Go out, check out the decorations and then finish off the night with one of your family’s favorite Christmas movies.
  8. Have a game night
Remember that card game you learned when you were ten? Maybe it’s time to put it into practice with a game night! Invite your friends over for some fun and games – please, don’t throw any Monopoly boards. Fix up some fun snacks and spend the night laughing over who got stuck with the +4 card in UNO.
  9. Do some deep cleaning
This one is a good way to spend a little time as well. Try vacuuming or perhaps dusting. Go through your old clothes and old items that you no longer need and give them away to places like Goodwill to be used again. You could also reorganize your room and clean out your closet. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find that $5 you put in your jeans pocket a month ago!
  10. Do some volunteer work
During the holiday season, there is always work that can be done to help others in your community. Find out what programs are going on in your hometown, and pop in for an hour or so to lend a helping hand to those who need it!
