The UTM Music Department presented the debut performance of “Trio
The trio is made up of Professor of Music Dr. Amy Yeung, on soprano vocals, Professor of Music Dr. Sandra Cox, on flute, and Lecturer of Piano Chan Jean on piano.
They performed several pieces from the romantic period of music and even a more modern English-Irish folksong.
Many of the songs chosen represented the rebirth of springtime in anticipation of the upcoming season. One of the more well-known pieces played during the recital was “The Flower Duet” by Leo Delibes, which has become extremely well-known through its use in different forms of pop culture.
Cox, being the originator of the idea for the trio, stated that she thought it was important to show her students what she is teaching them in the classroom.
“They [the students] have more respect for you when they see that you can actually do what you are telling them that they need to do,” Cox said.
According to Yeung, the trio has been in the works for many years.
“Dr. Cox approached me starting two years ago stating that there are so many flute music and voice pieces. Why don’t we get together?”
It was when Jean was hired sometime later when the trio was fully formed and they chose the name Trio
The Music Department presents many concerts and recitals throughout the semester with almost all being open and free to the public.
