Movie review: Get Hard

First and foremost, this is a movie worth seeing.

If you like Will Ferrell or Kevin Hart, you are guaranteed to laugh. Though they play complete opposites, they work very well side-by-side in the movie.

Ferrell is a giant beside Hart, playing a lovable but naive millionaire. Kevin Hart portrays a small, feisty character guiding the direction of the movie.

In an obvious turn of events, the two find themselves in a situation where they could use each other’s help. Ferrell’s character, James King, is being framed for embezzling millions of dollars. He has everything to lose: his career, his hilariously spoiled fiancée and all of his money.

Kevin Hart plays Darnell, a struggling car wash manager currently working in the parking garage of Ferrel’s building. Darnell is desperate to get his family to a safer neighborhood, but cannot afford to move. James stereotypes by assuming Darnell is a former inmate, and requests training for maximum security prison. Darnell sees the opportunity to make 30 grand, so he decides to play along even though he knows nothing about actual prison.

The movie is centered around Will Ferrell training for prison. Kevin Hart turns his house into a mock prison to give him the full experience.

The lessons include fighting, trash talking, making gang connections, and various other subjects too inappropriate to describe. Just prepare for some uncomfortable scenarios that make this film potentially the most raunchy and explicit of all of Ferrell’s movies.

There are pros and cons to this movie. The pros include the two lead characters, the hilarious guest stars (T.I. and John Mayer), and the offensive humor. The cons are Will Ferrell’s butt, the constant prison rape jokes, and the offensive humor.

Notice that I say that the offensive humor is a both pro and con in this film. This film will offend some people because that is inevitable when playing with race and sexuality jokes. However, I think if you take the film for the lighthearted and ridiculous comedy that it is, you will most likely laugh your head off.
