UTM warmly greeted new students during the 2014 freshman Move-In Mania.
The two-day event started Thursday, Aug. 21, with the sunny day starting early for organization volunteers as they signed in to begin helping freshmen move into their residence hall or University Village rooms.
Geared only with name tags and smiles, organization members fanned out and began getting the freshmen settled into their new homes.
“We arrived at 8 this morning and we were reminded of how exciting it is to move into a new place,” said Kache Brookes, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Inc. sorority.
Many organizations, greek and non-greek, came out to lend a helping hand. Along with plenty of help were plenty of rewards for the volunteers. Tents were set up and people were handing out water and RedBull to replenish the hard-working volunteers’ energy.
“I forgot how tiring move-in day could be, but we’ve been having a good day today. It feels good to be able to help them,” said Masalett Dockery, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity.
The freshmen weren’t the only ones grateful for the help. One parent blew out a sigh of relief when one of the many volunteers offered their services.
“When I was moving into my room in college, I don’t remember having people freely help carry my luggage up the stairs for me. It’s a really nice gesture,” said a grateful parent.
After all the hard work was complete, each individual was given the opportunity to sign out and enjoy UTM’s new and improved Dining Hall for a fee.
“I heard the cafe was open and ready for business, and that you could actually pay a little over $5 or $6 to eat without a meal plan. That’s what I call a meal after a hard day’s work,” said Tree Jones, a UTM senior.
