Under the Influence: Fashion Society is an organization centered on showcasing UT Martin students’ artistic talents through fashion. It was founded in August 2021 by its president, Shan’Tia Crawford. Their high council welcomes and encourages individuals who show interest or ability in modeling, hairdressing, designing, sewing, or creating in any capacity to join. Under the Influence also helps promote small businesses by bringing in entrepreneurs like nail technicians, make-up artists, photographers, artists and more creatives in their larger events. It is a perfect environment for like-minded people to network, exchange resources, and grow their trade. Everyone involved has a purpose and plays a significant role no matter how big or small their position may seem.
Not only does the organization host events like extravagant fashion shows, but they also emphasize the importance of community service. On Sundays, UTI: FS takes time to serve their local youth at Martin Enrichment Academy, also referred to as the teen center. When given the chance, they provide clothing donations for Weakley County. With positive morals and hard work, they will continue to gain recognition for the services they provide in the city of Martin.
This semester, the group plans on doing even more community service and hosting a great deal of events. This includes their Lover & Friends fundraiser where they will be selling Valentine’s Day baskets until February 10, 2023. In addition, the organization looks forward to highlighting women through activities, fundraisers, and club collaborations during Women’s History Month in March. Another exciting thing to anticipate is Black Fashion week. As a predominately Black organization, the members of UTI: FS will be sharing and celebrating the longstanding history of Black fashion. A lot of their content will be posted to their Instagram account where they hope to grow their following immensely as influencing and inspiring others is something the organization takes pride in. Members will also be sharing their talents and participating in creative workshops. Most importantly, model calls for the Spring fashion show are expected to be held on March 1, 2023.
