UT Martin has over 20 accredited master’s degree programs for individuals looking to further their education and career. The newest degree in the lineup is in Music Education, which was approved by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission last summer and then accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in November.

According to the UT Martin website, “The purpose of the Master of Music in Music Education degree is to provide music educators with advanced academic and professional skills for the classroom, enhancing their ability to apply music education methods, theory and research in the field.”

This 33-credit-hour program consists of hybrid courses that are taught both online and in the classroom to offer a flexible schedule. Furthermore, the core of the courses are in music education, music, and the option to emphasize in either general music, choral conduction, instrumental conduction or music leadership. Additionally, a multitude of courses cover educational leadership, business and communication.

The current requirements to be considered for this program are as follows: A bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited institution, a minimum 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA, two letters of recommendation from professional references and an interview with music faculty.

Once accepted, all students are required to take a diagnostic examination for music theory and music history, as well as a comprehensive examination, where students will present their research or teaching project as part of the course MUED 798: Research/Teaching Project in Music Education.

To find out more information about this program and the application, you can contact Dr. Jody Blake, coordinator of Music Education and associate professor of Music at jblake17@utm.edu or at 731-881-7482.
