Capitol Theatre in downtown Union City 6 p.m. Thursday, March 14 for a special Sing-A-Long Performance of Masquerade Theatre’s production of “The Sound of Music.”
“The Sound of Music” is a play that tells the story of the famous singing von Trapp family from the memoir of Maria von Trapp.
Retired naval officer, Captain George von Trapp, played by Dave Schlager, runs his orderly home like one of his former ships and his seven children like marching crewmen instead of playing children.
That is until the new governess sent from the Nonnberg Abbey, Maria Rainer, played by senior UTM Secondary Education English major Katy Searcy shows up and immediately upsets his rigid and structured life style.
The seven von Trapp children and the Rolf Gruber role have been double cast.
Jonathan Johnson, UTM alumnus, plays loveable ‘Uncle Max,’ Max Detweiler who loves the way he lives when he lives when he is with rich people. He and Elsa Schraeder, the beautiful millionaire played by Rebekah Watford descends on the von Trapps for an extended visit with plans of discovering new musical acts and thoughts of marriage in mind.
It’s plain to see that the Captain’s household staff does not appreciate being summoned by a whistle instead of by their names. Halley Sharp plays the sweet and loyal housekeeper, Frau Schmidt, and Zach Reed plays the stuffy yet laughable butler, Franz.
When Germany breaks their promise and invades Austria the Captain receives two not so welcome visitors. Herr Zeller, played by Todd Little represents the German authority since the Anschluss. He is the man that the audience is supposed to hate and does. Zeller brings with him Admiral von Schreiber of the Third Reich played by Jonathan Watford.
Schreiber is a stern naval officer but a likeable man.
Jennie Overall who plays Frau Zeller has the misfortune of being the lovable but dominated wife of Herr Zeller.
The oldest family in the valley is the Elberfelds headed by the proud and opinionated Baron Elberfeld who is played by Michael Cochran, senior UTM University Studies major. The distinguished and elegant Baroness Elberfeld who is played by Connie Cochran, UTM alumnus and staff member, happens to be Michael Cochran’s wife in real life. Kate Crabtree, Rebekah Hudgins, Alexandria Jefferson, Kallie Worrell play the Elberfeld children.
“I have enjoyed being in the production,” Michael Cochran said.
The Nuns of Nonnberg Abbey are lead by the wise and caring Mother Abbess who is played by Rachel Joost, UTM alumnus. She is joined by the optimistic and loveable, Mistress of Postulants, Sister Margaretta, played by Becky Crabtree, UTM alumnus. Added to the mixture of their discussion is the slightly prudish Mistress of Novices, Sister Berthe, played by Reachel Hudgins. The strict rule follower, Sister Sophia played by Sue Ellen Morris completes their closely-knit circle for consultations.
Also playing Nuns are UTM alumnus Julia Ellegood, Yvannah Garcia, Emily Houston, Katie King, Jalyn Mosley, Caroline Rushing and Ariana Warner who also plays the role of the new postulant.
Tickets for the special Sing- A-Long Performance are $10 and may only be purchased at the Box Office door starting at 5 p.m.
