Public Safety says there is no reason to be concerned about recent reports of masked persons at UTM.
On Thursday, The Pacer spoke with Jerry Garcia, Police Lieutenant for the Department of Public Safety and gained information regarding recent masked person sightings at UTM.
After being asked about reports of a person wearing all black and a ski mask in Gooch Hall late Wednesday night, Garcia said, “The officers went and checked and spoke to the individual, he’s a maintenance worker, night-maintenance.” The lieutenant said the individual was wearing all black and a cold-weather mask, and that it was because of sickness that he did not want to spread during work. Public Safety has since asked the individual to get a different type of protective mask and assures students that there is no threat.
There was one other call earlier this week about a masked individual in the library to Public Safety.
“Tuesday they had a call… he was a ‘Stormtrooper’ and had the whole costume and mask,” says Garcia. An officer was immediately sent to the library, where the call had been made, and asked the individual to remove the mask from the costume. No threat was imminent.
Garcia says that there is no reason to be concerned about repeated calls, because they have all been addressed. At this time the Martin Police Department is still investigating the incident that occurred earlier in the week at The Station apartments adjacent to campus.
