Martin ranked no. 8 safest city in Tennessee

Alarms.org has ranked the City of Martin as the eighth safest city in Tennessee for 2019.

Using statistics such as the number of violent crimes, property crimes, violent crime rate and property crime rate, Martin came in eighth place. Germantown and Collierville are the only other cities in West Tennessee to crack the top 10, with both coming in at first and fourth, respectively.

Middle Tennessee had the most cities on this list, with Brentwood coming in second, Gallatin third, Portland fifth, Spring Hill sixth, Franklin seventh and Hendersonville in ninth.

Soddy-Daisy, in 10th place, was the only East Tennessee city to make the list.

According to the website, Alarms.org reviewed the FBI Uniform Crime Report Statistics to select the safest cities in Tennessee. Cities that failed to report a complete crime report to the FBI and those with fewer than 10,000 people were not factored in.

The FBI classifies violent crimes as being, “…composed of four offenses: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Violent crimes are defined in the UCR Program as those offenses that involve force or threat of force. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims.”

The Martin Police Department made a Facebook post acknowledging Martin’s ranking. “According to [The National Council for Home Safety and Security] report, Martin scored a violent crime rate of 3.285 per 1,000 population and a property crime rate of 25.901 per 1,000 population.”

Other local cities that were listed in the study include Paris (21), Jackson (25), Union City (41) and Dyersburg (44).
