Patriotic tunes and applause filled the UC Ballroom 7 p.m. Thursday, June 27, as the Martin Community Band continuing its summer series performed “A Star-Spangled Celebration!” to an enthusiastic crowd.
This third concert of the series was guest conducted by Steven Westbrook, Peabody High School band director and UTM alumnus. Westbrook graduated from UTM in 2007 with a degree in Music Education and went on to teach band for two years at Dyer County High School and is currently starting his fifth year at Peabody High School.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing trumpet in the community band. I’m usually on the conducting side these days, so I try to seize opportunities to play. Martin Community Band was a fantastic idea, and I’m glad Dr. John Oelrich extended the opportunity to conduct this talented group of musicians,” Westbrook said.
“We had a very successful turnout at the concert, and I am proud of the support for music in Martin!”
The ballroom exploded with applause as the veterans within the audience stood as the band played the “Armed Forces Salute.”
“The members of the community band have a good time at rehearsals and enjoy giving the concerts. What fun it was for us to play Sousa marches, songs for the armed services andother patriotic tunes tonight! The audience was very responsive and participated right along with us from singing the “Star Spangled Banner” to clapping vigorously with the ‘Stars and Stripes Forever.’ This was a great prelude to the July 4th holiday,” said Dr. Elaine Harriss, UTM Professor and Chair of Music and Martin Community Band member.
An uplifting and different rendition of the classic hymn “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” was performed in the traditional New Orleans style to a very receptive audience.
“It’s wonderful and enjoyable. It’s a chance for those of us who enjoy music but work in
other occupations to get out and do something different and meet people,” said Dr. Linda Husmann, UTM Microbiology and Immunology Professor.
The next concert, “Music from the Stage and Screen,” is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 11 at the Festival Park. For more information on joining the Martin Community Band or future performances, visit http//www.utm.edu/departments/band/community_band.php.
