The Eta Xi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. held their 102nd founders’ day event Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Watkins Auditorium.
The MC of the event was sorority member Kendall Ford.
The Eta Xi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was founded on Tuesday, May 9, 1970, on the campus of The University of Tennessee at Martin by nine undergraduate women. These women established the first black greek lettered organization on the campus of UT-Martin.
The program began with “The Second Greatest Story” a short poem read by Bria Evans describing Delta Sigma Theta’s background and achievements.
Next was a selection of “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” performed by members Chasity Watson and Kyanna Blakemore.
Following the selection were poetry readings by Vice President Kache Brooks entitled “Delta Fever” and “Some are Ladies Others are Women,” was read by Angelica Gunn. Mercedes Floyd read “Delta,” and DeAria Shields ended the readings with a poem called, “Thank You to Our 22 Founders.”
Many other talents were displayed at the event including a dance by Corey Brooks to John Legend’s “This Time.”
The event climaxed with Chasity Watson, Kendall Ford and Kyanna Blakemore singing an acapella selection were they were joined on stage by their sorority sisters for the conclusion.
Chasity Watson, president of the Eta Xi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta at the University of Tennessee at Martin thanked the campus for supporting the Sorority.
“On behalf of the Eta Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. we would like to personally thank all of those who came and supported us in celebrating our Founders Day. 102 years of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and the legacy continues.”
