Student Activities Council held the 2014 Homecoming Lip Sync on Tuesday, October 22.
The event’s theme was “Night of ’70s Movies”, as competitors had to reenact a famous 1970s movie using different music tracks featuring a single chosen word.
Kappa Alpha finished in first place in the fraternity division with their take on the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, choosing “candy” as their theme word. For the sororities, Chi Omega finished in first place, reenacting Grease while using the word “heart”.
Other performances were inspired by movies such as Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Rocky, and M*A*S*H.
Each group participating in this year’s competition put a significant amount of effort and creativity into their routines.
“We practiced every day for over a month, for at least three hours a day,” said Julia Ewoldt, a member of the Chi Omega sorority. “Each group made up their own routine, and our two speakers had to make up their dances themselves. …Each group was in charge of making their own [costumes], a lot of us bought stuff and added more to them. For example, the men[‘s] group[s], they bought the suits and then they got glitter and painted on those, which we spent hours on too.”
The groups performed in front of an excited crowd outside the Elam Center. Despite the low temperatures, the contestants seemed to have little issue maneuvering around the stage and making elaborate costume changes when required.
