The Paul Meek Library will be hosting a workshop series titled “How to Read.”
Erin Weber, public services librarian, will be teaching students how to read textbooks, scholarly journals and a library call number.
Weber, through talking to UTM professors and other librarians, found a need to teach students on ways to understand the materials they are reading.
“It was only five years ago I was doing this, trying to read textbooks and scholarly articles and I was struggling with it and I was like man, I wish someone would teach me how to do this,” Weber said.
Weber conducted a pilot program with assistant professor of Sociology Dr. Lindsey Anderson’s classes. After her success through the pilot program, Weber decided to expand the program for the Spring 2020 semester.
“These ‘How to Read’ series are not about reading the words, it’s about how you understand what you read, how you retain it, how to apply it to your classes and then hopefully how do you apply it to your life,” Weber said.
The sessions will discuss the different ways students can approach reading materials such as connecting the material to one’s own life or talking about the material out loud.
The session “How to Read Your Textbook” will be held on Jan. 17 from noon- 1:00 p.m., Jan. 23 from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m., Feb. 5 from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m. and Feb. 24 from noon- 1 p.m.
The session “How to Read a Call Number: Finding Books in the Library” will be held on Feb. 6 from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m. and Feb. 10 from noon- 1 p.m.
The session “How to Read a Scholarly Article” will be held Jan. 27 from noon- 1 pm., Feb. 26 from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m. and March 19 from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m.
