Legally Blonde bends and snaps its way to Union City

“Legally Blonde: The Musical” will be taking over Union City in March.

Director Jonathan Johnson says he is very excited about this production and wants to encourage everyone to audition.

“People should come to audition, because this is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of something that is very rare in this area‑ a very contemporary, completely modern musical theatre experience. Not to mention that when it opened a short 5 years ago in NYC, it was the toast of Broadway,” Johnson said.

The show will be comprised of a large cast that includes 54 total roles for both men and women.

“There literally are so many different and diverse roles that there is a part for a person from every walk of life,” Johnson said.

Johnson says he believes the show will be successful for several reasons.

“The script is hysterical, the music is catchy and the heroine is someone who the audience will love to root for. Mostly, it’s just a good time, and who doesn’t like to have a good time?” Johnson said.

Auditions will be held Jan. 12-13 at the Masquerade Theatre. On Sunday, Jan. 12, auditions will be held from 2-6 p.m., and on Monday, Jan. 13, auditions will run from 5-8:30 p.m. Auditions will include an a capella musical audition that should be no longer than a minute, cold readings from the script and a dance routine from the show’s choreographer, Delinda Scarborough Goad.

Johnson says that even if someone has not acted before, he or she should still come audition.

“I’m all for casting new people. If you’ve never had the opportunity to act before, now is the perfect time to do it,” Johnson said.

The following list of character descriptions were found on the show’s Facebook page, Masquerade Theatre presents Legally Blonde: The Musical.

  • Elle Woods: mid-late 20s, soprano – Everyone’s favorite blonde heroine; naive, not stupid; an innocent in every sense of the word.
  • Margot: early-mid 20s, soprano – Elle’s perky, slightly ditzy sorority sister; a “glass half full” kind of girl.
  • Serena: early-mid 20s – soprano – Spunky, outspoken “go get it” type of sorority sister; a realist and very blunt, but everyone loves her for it.
  • Pilar: early-mid 20s, alto – Elle’s sorority sister; flirty, energetic, gets along with everyone kind of gal.
  • Emmett: mid-late 20s, tenor – A Harvard grad student; a nerd but in a lovable kind of way; very smart and down to earth.
  • Paulette: mid 30s-mid 40s, belter – Great comic timing, a down-on-her-luck hair stylist who becomes Elle’s very own “fairy godmother.”
  • Professor Callahan: mid 40s-mid 50s, baritone – A polished, snobby Harvard law professor who isn’t as friendly as he seems.
  • Warner Huntington III: mid-late 20s, baritone – Elle’s ex, a wannabe Abercrombie model who is sort of a jerk.
  • Vivienne: mid-late 20s, alto – Brunette; a no-nonsense, officious kind of woman; Warner’s new fiance.
  • Brooke: mid-late 20s – On trial for the murder of her very rich (and much older) husband.
  • Enid Hoops: early-mid 20s – loud, outspoken feminist; a law student assigned to the Brooke Wyndem trial.
