University Singers is an ensemble that meets every semester and is directed by Dr. Mark Statler, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
University Singers requires no audition and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 1:50 p.m. in the Fine Arts Blankenship Recital Hall.
Statler explains that his favorite part of directing University Singers is the community that has been built. “The different backgrounds the musicians have come from really builds community and allows people who might not interact any other time to do so and learn from each other,” says Statler.
Whether you are a choral extraordinaire or are just trying singing as a hobby, University Singers is open to all. Little experience is needed for University Singers. There are musicians of all different musical backgrounds and experiences enrolled in the course.
“University Singers is a safe place for all musicians to explore music and their voices because they are surrounded by people who are doing the same thing,” says Statler.
Statler goes on to explain that one aspect he loves about University Singers and music in general is that it bridges the gap between age range, lifestyle and more. Music is for everyone.
Grace VanSlyke, a music education major at UT Martin, says “The best aspect of being in University Singers is getting to sing with people from all different levels of choral experience. As a future educator, it teaches me how to educate students with varying experience and interests.”
“This ensemble has definitely impacted me as a musician and person. I recommend joining this ensemble; it has been one of the best experiences of my college career.” VanSlyke added.
