UTM will be reopening its center in Jackson on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
The Jackson Center will give more students the chance to get a more convenient education by giving them the opportunity to earn degrees in Bachelor of University Studies, Bachelor in Social Work and Master’s in Education.
The building will be located at 3031 Highway 45 Bypass, which is north of the Union University campus.
The public opening at 3 p.m. Oct. 11 will feature statements from UTM Chancellor Tom Rakes and UT President Joe DiPietro. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening.
Along with classrooms and offices, the center also features a computer facility and a library.
It is expected that about 125 students will be enrolled by Spring 2012 and that it could escalate to about 300 by Fall 2012.
Tommy Cates, executive director for all Extended Campus and Online Studies programs, said that the center will not hurt UTM’s main-campus enrollment numbers.
“Most students in the centers are non-traditional students and they will only come to the campus after they have taken as many classes as they can at the centers,” Cates said. “The building was constructed for UTM specifically for this center. It is located in the part of Jackson that is expanding as retail and services. We feel this is the ideal place to locate a center and we look forward to growths in enrollments.”
The center will also serve as the place of contact for the Dual Enrollment Program, which allows high school student to take classes that serve as high school credit and double as college credits.
The dual enrollment classes will consist of English, art, history, agriculture, math and many more.
