The men’s intramural flag football season is officially off and running. The league increased to 14 teams this year, a six-team surge from the previous fall.
The Tops, one of the 14 teams participating in the league, had a rough start to the season; losing big in the season opener. However, the Tops made the needed adjustments and answered with a win in game two.
The former team captain of the Tops, Drake Hodge, says competition is always fun.
“No one wants to lose, but the teams that are playing for fun will always have a better time, win or lose, than the other teams who play only for an ego boost”.
Putting practices together prior to the season can be challenging for students to navigate. Hodge says gathering the whole team for practice is simply not attainable for busy college students to achieve.
“We wanted to practice about three days a week, but that doesn’t work out well due to everyone’s schedule. We ended up only having one light practice before our first game”.
Nonetheless, Hodge says his team’s friendships and chemistry with one another will be what gives them the edge throughout the remainder of the season.
“We are all good friends and have chemistry. That makes it easier for us as a team to compete against other teams that may have individual talent, but no chemistry. As a team of friends, we are just having fun”, says Hodge.
Each team will play five games in total. For a team to make the single elimination playoff bracket they must win a minimum of two of their five regular season games to qualify.
The Tops next game is Monday, Oct. 23, at 5 p.m. against ZAE. Hodge and the Tops will look to get their second straight win as the playoffs are on the horizon.
