It is once again time for the humans of UTM to run in fear as Humans vs. Zombies begins for the fourth semester.
The 24-hour game of tag has been a popular part of campus life since it was first implemented back in the fall semester of 2012.
“Everyone who plays the game absolutely loves it,” said Jesse Kowalewski, one of the game administrators. “I haven’t had any kind of negative feedback, you know, that I couldn’t resolve with a simple solution.”
The game has a very simple concept; the zombie apocalypse has made its way to Martin and is spreading quickly and the remaining humans must do everything in their power to survive the week. Each human is equipped with a stress ball and socks that can be used to hold off the zombies.
In past years, the only defense mechanism humans had against the zombies were the stress balls and socks, but this year they are getting some extra help.
“We’re bringing in new weapons, the NERF and foam swords,” said Kowalewski. “You’ll have the foam sword, and you’re allowed to hit the zombie and stun them just like with a stress ball and a sock. This will help a lot of the human players that don’t run as fast as other people.”
Humans vs. Zombies has been growing every semester since its inception. Last semester, the game featured 235 players. This semester, Kowalewski said he expects well over 275.
Those playing who make it to the end of the week and remain human will receive a reward for their effort. Last semester, all the remaining humans won official UTM Humans vs. Zombie T-shirts with one lucky human winning $200. However, things will be different this time around for those who have their eyes on the prize at the end of the week.
“This semester, however many survive are going to have to fight for their reward,” said Kowalewski.
For those interested in playing, it is not too late to signup. There will be another meeting Monday, March 18. For information on the game and meeting times, check out the Facebook page at Human vs. Zombies at UTMartin.
