The Skyhawk softball team sailed past Trevecca early in the game, leading to a final score of 6-1.
After quickly shutting out Trevecca in the first inning, junior Kayla Wade came running across home plate from second base after senior Leah Taylor sent the ball flying into left field.
Next up to bat, sophomore Kenzi Tate got a base hit bringing Taylor home giving the Skyhawks the early 2-0 advantage.
Trevecca was shutout yet again in the second inning and the Skyhawks came out hitting as well as they had in the first. With freshman Deven Wilson already on base, fellow freshman Jessie Britt would hit one out of the park adding two more runs for the Skyhawks in the early stages of the game.
After a scoreless third inning, Britt would add on another run, but the Skyhawks’ offense that started out with a bang quickly fizzled out in the middle innings.
Trevecca scored their first run in the top of the sixth, but it was too little too late. Taylor responded with one final run for UTM as they closed out the victory.
Despite the win, the effort of the team was something that UTM head coach Conley Canary called into question.
“We got up on them early in the first three innings and we just kind of sat there,” said Canary. “We just didn’t play real aggressively today … like we wanted to be out there … we’re just trying to find the consistency to continue to add on after getting a team down early in the ballgame and look ahead to critical conference games on the horizon with Belmont and Tennessee State.”
