Five days after helping lead the UTM men’s basketball squad to an exhilarating season-opening victory, sophomore guard Eden Holt earned Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Newcomer of the Week honors today.
A 5-10, 175-pound guard, Holt becomes the 25th player in Skyhawk history to nab the OVC’s top newcomer weekly award.
Holt had quite a debut for UTM during Wednesday’s 93-87 double overtime triumph over Evansville. He poured in a game-high 24 points (on only nine field goal attempts), four rebounds, three assists and a steal. It marked the fourth-best scoring tally in Skyhawk history for a player making his UTM debut in a season opener.
With the Skyhawks trailing by three points, Holt drilled a contested NBA-range trifecta with one second left in regulation to force overtime. In double overtime, he essentially iced the win with a 7-for-8 performance from the free throw line over the final 59 seconds of the contest.
Additionally, Holt did not commit a single turnover in 36 minutes as the team’s primary point guard. The Houston, Texas native ended his night with a 6-of-9 shooting effort (including 3-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc) while sinking nine of his 10 tries from the charity stripe.
