The League of Striving Artists Holiday Art Bazaar, held Dec. 6-8 in the art gallery of the Fine Arts Building, raised $2,400.
The bazaar sells unique items handmade by UTM students, faculty and alumni. These items include holiday cards, paintings, scarves and other textiles, ceramics, glass ornaments and more. All items could be purchased to help support local artists, according to a University Relations press release.
Jason Stout, associate professor of Art and LSA adviser, said the money raised “will go directly into the LSA achievement scholarship fund, a new mid-level art scholarship based on academics, service, and creative research.”
The new scholarship was created last spring by the 2017-2018 student officers of LSA. According to a University Relations press release, they established the League of Striving Artists Achievement Scholarship “to help future visual arts students fund their education and artistic passion while at UTM. The annual award is the first student-organization-funded scholarship for visual arts students and will be open to those studying graphic design, art education and studio art beginning with the spring 2019 semester. The criteria will consider service to the chapter and the community as well as academic achievement and scholarship.”
This was the fifth annual holiday art bazaar. It was cosponsored by LSA and the Department of Visual and Theatre Arts.
Stout also said that, in the spring 2019 semester, LSA will be working on a new mural in the University Center about campus life, and on art book bench sculptures, which will be installed outside the Paul Meek Library.
LSA is an organization for UTM art students who strive to promote an appreciation for art and artist development through academics, service learning, community service projects and leadership both on campus and in the community.
