Hayley Williams of the band, Paramore, dropped a new surprise solo album entitled FLOWERS for VASES/descansos at midnight Feb. 5.
FLOWERS for VASES/descansos is a prequel to Williams’ last album, Petals for Armor.
“This isn’t really a follow-up to Petals For Armor. If anything, it’s a prequel or some sort of detour between parts one and two of Petals,” Williams posted to her Instagram story on Thursday. “I had written a long and poetic press release but man, after 16 years of being in the music business, 6 albums, and a lot of ‘strategies’ for how to ‘roll-out’ a project the right way…writing more words in an attempt to describe better words I’ve written for the album at hand just seemed so boring and silly.”
The album is soulful, haunting, and absolutely beautiful. The first track entitled “First Thing To Go” stole my ears and eventually my heart with its captivating melody and emotionally-stirring lyrics. My favorite line is “Why do memories glow, the way real memories don’t? My altar is full of our love’s delusions.” I found this line very poetic as is the whole album.
If reading the lyrics from this album, you will feel as if you picked up a poetry collection. If you are familiar with Paramore, this album is not what you’re used to hearing from Williams. FLOWERS for VASES/descansos is much softer and more on the indie side of rock. I would give the album a solid 10 out of 10. You can listen on Spotify, YouTube, YouTube Music or iTunes.
