Early Friday morning a local man was arrested on charges including aggravated assault and driving with a suspended license.
Suspect Tamee Hyde, 56 of Martin, was signaled to pull over on Highway 45 in Greenfield by Deputy Neil Cantrell of the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department for not having a functional tail light on his motorcycle. Instead of pulling over, the suspect accelerated his motorcycle and led Cantrell on a chase into Martin, where he attempted to evade the police using at least 12 different streets.
At one point, Weakley County Deputy Bryan Chandler exited his car to attempt to halt the motorcycle. The suspect struck Chandler on the left leg and then continued driving. Martin Police Department Officer Trae Vaughn reported in his initial statement that Chandler had “an abrasion and knot” on his left shin. Chandler did not require medical attention, said Capt. Randall McGowan, in the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department’s official press release on Friday.
The suspect was apprehended on Walters Avenue and was placed in police custody.
“Deputies noticed a smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from Hyde,” McGowan said. “He failed some field sobriety tests and refused a chemical test to determine his blood alcohol content.”
Police found the suspect’s license to be suspended following six previous convictions for driving with a suspended license in Tennessee and Kentucky. The motorcycle did not have a license plate, according to the official press release.
“The offender is being charged with aggravated assault, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, driving on suspended 7th offense and compliance with financial responsibility,” according to Martin Police Department’s official report. McGowan also reported that the suspect is being charged with “evading arrest, driving under the influence, violation of the implied consent law, speeding, reckless driving … and violation of the light law.”
