Hang out at Homecoming events this weekend

One of the biggest weekends during the UT Martin school year is quickly approaching.

Homecoming is a week full of events to engage school spirit and bring alumni back to campus to see what the future holds for UT Martin. The weekend of events is highlighted by the homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 5. Below is an all-encompassing guide of how to survive homecoming weekend.

Friday, Oct. 4 will start at noon with the Dr. Henry Parker Speaker Series in the Boling University Center Ballroom, with civil rights icon, activist and New York Times bestselling author, Ruby Bridges.

Following this event is the Rope Pull championship at 3 p.m. located beside Pacer Pond, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Block Party at 4 p.m. To cap off the night, pyramid & pep rally competitions will be held in the Tom & Kathleen Elam Center at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 5, the slate of events begins at 9 a.m. with the Can Sculpture Contest sponsored by the Rotaract Club, Phi Eta Sigma and the Student Government Association (SGA) in The Quad.

Beginning shortly thereafter is Quad City and the UT Martin Football Skyhawk Walk in the Quad at 10:00 a.m. Official tailgating for the football game begins at noon with each organization having its setup along the parking lot.

The homecoming game kicks off at 1 p.m. with UT Martin vs. Gardner-Webb University at Hardy Graham Stadium. During halftime, the official Homecoming king and queen will be announced along with alumni awards being presented. In addition to awards being presented, many alumni will be honored for various achievements that they have achieved post-graduation.

At 5 p.m., the Black Alumni Council (BAC) will be hosting Meet the Chancellor inside the Bob Carroll Building. The Homecoming Step Show hosted by NPHC and Multicultural Affairs will begin at 7 p.m. in the Skyhawk Fieldhouse and will feature performances by Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho. Awards will be given to the highest-scoring fraternity, highest-scoring sorority and for overall best in show.

On Sunday, Oct. 6, the Homecoming Brunch is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. in the dining hall. Following is the ROTC Homecoming Hustle 5K Classic sponsored by Martin Running Company beginning at 2 p.m. with runners starting along Brian Brown Memorial Greenway.
