20 UTM fraternities and sororities participated in this year’s Greek Week, a week of service, revelries, friendly competition and chapter pride.
Greek Week lasted from Feb. 10-14 and contained a wide variety of events such as Line Dance, Step Show, a Battle of the Sexes Trivia Night, a service night and a karaoke night.
Greek Councils that participated included the Interfraternity Council (IFC), College Panhellenic Council (CPC) and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).
The week-long festivities saw two main competitions, the Line Dance, held on Thursday, Feb. 13, and Step Show, held Friday, Feb. 14th.
Each fraternity/sorority brought a mix of dance and spirit.
Olivia Morris, a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority said, “Every group who participated put in so much work, effort, time, blood, sweat and tears into what they did, and every organization did amazing!”
For Line Dance, each chapter competed in a specific category based on their Council. The title for first place went as follows: Sigma Chi for IFC, Chi Omega for CPC, Alpha Phi Alpha for NPHC Fraternities and Delta Sigma Theta for NPHC Sororities.
For the Step Show, each fraternity and sorority were pitted against its counterparts, with Kappa Alpha Order taking first for IFC and Zeta Tau Alpha taking first for CPC.
Other competitions included a Battle of the Sexes Trivia Night on Monday, Feb. 10, in which the IFC and NPHC Fraternities won.
The overall winners of Greek Week included Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority from NPHC Council, Kappa Alpha Order and Pi Kappa Alpha from IFC tied for first, and Zeta Tau Alpha from CPC, who also won Best in Show.
Members of Greek life also spent Wednesday together for a cooperative karaoke night.
However, Greek Week was about more than challenges and being competitive, it was also a time for coming together as a community and getting involved in local issues.
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, all three Greek Councils participated in a group service night, in which the organizations from CPC, IFC and NPHC helped pack 15,000 meals for the Martin community in less than two hours.
“One of my favorite moments was the service night and working together with other members of the Greek community to help pack meals together,” said Morris. “It really showed that the Greek community is just that, a community, and willing to work together to better lives across campus and in the local Weakley County community as well.”
