Pi Kappa Alpha and Chi Omega took the top spots in the Step Show competition for Greekfest 2010.The Pikes won first place and Best of Show in the fraternity division and Chi Omega won first place and Best of Show in the sorority division. Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and Alpha Omicron Pi sorority placed second.
Proceeds from the competition, held Feb. 19 in the Skyhawk Fieldhouse, were donated to Habitat for Humanity.
Step Show emcees were Kyle Bond of Alpha Tau Omega, Chase Pickett of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Matt Crick of Pi Kappa Alpha, who truly kept the crowd entertained between shows. Every team was judged and given points in the categories of creativity, precision of step, strength of step, professionalism, and spirit of steppers.
The Fraternity Division contest began with Sigma Chi, a team of 12 steppers who wore blue jeans and black shirts with blue Sigma Chi letters outlined in white. In their show, the Sigma Chis were statues that came to life after the janitor left the room.
Next, Alpha Tau Omega opened up its scene with a lone, tied-up man. Five steppers then entered sporting a tribal look of black wigs, white masks with black tribal markings, white shirts with ATO and other black markings, frayed khaki shorts, and brown shoes.
“We put a lot of time and hard work into practicing, but I’m definitely glad it is over,” said Chase Fish, a senior ATO step team member.
Pi Kappa Alpha swept onto the stage to the theme song from the “Cops” TV series. The 10-member team was dressed in all black with SWAT written across the front of their shirts. They also wore black military-style boots, which emphasized every step.
The Sigma Phi Epsilon team had six “convicts” dressed in typical black-and-white-striped jail attire as well as two “prison guards.” The jailbirds worked hard to step their way out of the prison, and succeeded in doing so.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s show featured five soldiers going through a boot camp where they learned to improve their stepping moves. They were dressed in black shirts with the yellow SAEletters, camouflage pants and military boots.
Alpha Omicron Pi opened the Sorority Division contest and lit up the stage with their single-strapped red blouses, black slacks and black high-heeled shoes. Their steps and chants let everyone know they were there to compete.
Next, Alpha Delta Pi began their show with three women surrounding a fire. The “tribal chief” came out on stage and prepared her “first and finest” women to step with pride. The ADPi team members wore brown and orange tank tops, brown leggings, grass skirts, brown flat shoes, and greeneryaround their ankles.
The women of Chi Omega “broke the strings” with their show. They began as puppets in boxes and soon took control of the performance to give the audience a good show. The Chi O’s wore sleeveless red tops, black capris, white hosiery, black variety dance shoes, and sequined wrist bands.
Caryce Gilmore, a Chi O sophomore step team member, said, “We had fun with our step show this year and wanted a theme that would get everybody’s attention. We had a great group of girls and I’m proud of our hard work.”
Zeta Tau Alpha sorority wrapped up the night with a 1920s mobster theme. The women dressed the part with black fedora hats, white button-up blouses, pink suspenders, black slacks, and black high-heeled shoes.
“Stepping takes so much more than practice and hard work,” said freshman ZTA step team member Camille Hall. “It takes love for your sisters and an unbreakable bond with one another.
