Line dance, lip-sync and step show are just a few of the events that will be held Feb. 12-15, during UTM’s Greek Fest.
The Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council will participate in their annual event, Greek Fest. This is a week dedicated to celebrating the many fraternities and sororities on the UTM campus as well as raising awareness about several issues through philanthropies.
The members of each will participate in several events throughout the five days. The week will begin on Monday, Feb. 12 with an all-Greek picture that will be used for many different things throughout the next year. At 6 p.m. on Monday evening, members of the Greek organizations will participate in an event known as Greek Race.
“Greek Race is set up like the Amazing Race. Teams are made up of two people, each of which must be from a different organization,” Jared Anderson said.
Line dance will be held on Tuesday night. During this event, each group participating will dance around the line that will be taped in a large square. The groups will be allowed to pick one song and choreograph a unique dance. Typically, the groups practice their dances for a couple weeks prior to the event.
Wednesday, the fraternities and sororities will participate in an event called Lip Sync. The groups will put together routines, which can be up to eight minutes in length. Each fraternity and sorority is allowed to decide which word they will base their routine on this year. Being able to decide different words will allow for some variety in the performances as well as a higher level of creativity on all parts.
The week will conclude with the Greek Step Show on Friday night. As of now, the participants for the step show have not been fully determined. The fraternities and sororities have until Feb. 6 to turn in their packets.
All events are open to the general public and will be held in the Field House. There will be an admission charge for the events.
“Line dance admission will be $3 at the door, Lip Sync will be $5, and Step Show will be $8 in advance and $10 at the door,” Anderson said.
Each year, the Greek office selects a philanthropy and the admissions to the events help support that particular cause. This year, the philanthropy will be a joint effort. The money collected from Line Dance will go to the Carl Perkin’sCenter; while the money from the other two will benefit Bethany Scott of AOII, who was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
“We’ve chosen two really great philanthropies this year that the entire Greek community has been very supportive of. We want everyone to come out and support Greek life, but also these great causes,” Anderson said.
